Nuna RAVA Convertible Car Seat Recall
The recall focuses on Nuna RAVA convertible car seats manufactured between July 16, 2016, and October 25, 2023.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified that debris—such as food particles, dirt, or sand—can infiltrate the front harness adjuster mechanism. This contamination may prevent the adjuster from securely clamping onto the strap, resulting in a loose harness that fails to properly restrain a child during a crash.
Injuries Caused by Defective Car Seats
If the harness strap of any car seat becomes loose or detaches during a crash, children are at risk of:
Whiplash: If the harness system fails to properly secure a child, they may be jerked forward or side to side during a collision. This sudden movement can cause the head and neck to snap back and forth, resulting in whiplash. This injury can strain muscles, ligaments, and the neck spine.
Head and neck injuries: In the event of a crash, a loose or ineffective harness could allow a child’s head to move excessively, potentially causing the head to strike the car’s interior (like the seat back or window). This can lead to traumatic head injuries, including concussions, skull fractures, or neck injuries like cervical spine damage.
Spinal injuries: A child who is not properly restrained in a car seat may experience significant spinal flexion or extension during the crash. Without the support of a properly tightened harness, the spine can be subjected to forces that cause fractures, dislocations, or soft tissue injuries. These injuries may range from minor sprains to more severe spinal cord injuries.
Fractured or broken bones: If a child is not securely fastened, the lack of proper restraint could result in a child being thrown forward or sideways, causing limbs to strike hard surfaces or bend unnaturally. This could lead to broken arms, legs, or other fractures. Additionally, improper restraint could increase the risk of multiple impact points within the vehicle, causing more severe bodily injury.
Chest trauma: An improperly adjusted or malfunctioning harness system may allow a child to move excessively, causing them to hit the seat belt or other parts of the vehicle with force. This impact could lead to severe chest trauma, including broken ribs, punctured lungs, or internal organ damage. The lack of restraint could result in direct trauma to the chest, which can be life-threatening.
Suffocation: An improperly adjusted harness could lead to a child becoming too loose in the seat, causing the body to move into an abnormal position during a car accident. This could result in your child’s airway being compressed or blocked, particularly if the chest or abdomen is not securely restrained. This may lead to difficulty breathing, suffocation, or other respiratory complications.
Wrongful death: If the harness system fails completely in securing a child, the resulting injury could be fatal. In the event of a severe crash, improper restraint could lead to traumatic head, neck, or chest injuries, causing fatal injuries.
